GREENSBORO, N.C. – In response to the passage and signing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Susan Shumaker, president of Cone Health Foundation, released the following statement:
“The recently passed federal spending and tax bill will have devastating impacts on the health and overall wellbeing of people and communities across the country, including right here in Greensboro.
By slashing federal funding and increasing restrictions on essential services and benefits like Medicaid and SNAP, many of our neighbors, friends and families will face higher barriers to accessing care, food and more. Tens of thousands of North Carolinians could lose access to health care. Families and kids will go hungry. Everyday people will bear the brunt of higher uninsured rates, making everyday living less sustainable.
For ten years, Cone Health Foundation advocated to expand eligibility for Medicaid in our state. Now, almost 42,000 Guilford County residents and 670,000 hardworking North Carolinians are at risk of losing their newly-gained Medicaid coverage, with expansion facing new barriers and a potential rollback. CHF remains steadfast in our commitment to the communities we serve. We will continue to advocate for increasing access to health care, along with access to healthy food, safe and healthy housing, economic mobility and access to education. And we will do so by listening to and centering the communities who are most affected by these decisions.
We’re grateful to our partners who engage in this work with us and we stay focused on our vision of creating a Greensboro where health inequities no longer exist.”
