Stories

For over 14 years, Indigo’s Cultural Art Centers (ICAC) has been providing services to the greater Greensboro area. They host a multitude of community events aimed at facilitating conversations around the significance of the African experience in America.

Indigo’s Cultural Art Centers began under the visionary leadership of its founder, Lee Ester Niajallah Hendrix-Wilson, who was a fierce advocate for the mental health of African Americans through cultural healing modalities. She was trained and certified in many mental health specialty areas, such as CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor), CMFT (Certified Marriage and Family Therapist), and a LCASA (Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist). For the past two years, the organization has been guided by the leadership of Tonya Poole. Recently, she said, “because of the strong foundation laid by our founder and the continued support of our community, I am encouraged that the future of ICAC is bright. I believe that our organization will continue to build a legacy of empowering those who are touched by the work that we do.”

One of ICAC’s longest running programs is, “The Greensboro Kwanzaa Collective,” which has provided a centralized place for people to celebrate the holiday of Kwanzaa. To honor the impact and legacy of historical ties, they provide special recognition for community elders and ancestors who have demonstrated the principles of the Nguzo Saba all year long.

Another long-standing program is “The Healing Wheel Project,” – the program that has received new funding from the Cone Health Foundation to support a cohort of women leaders. The Healing Wheel Project is an intentional space designed to support the healing, growth, and perpetuation of the culture of Black Women in America. The goal of the program is to improve the mental health of women by teaching them tools for how to deal with challenges that arise in their lives, because when you improve the mental health of women, you impact the mental health of the whole family and community. They are currently accepting applications for their Healing Wheel Retreat, which is planned for August 29 – Sept 1, 2025.
