Capacity-Building Grant Partner: Positive Direction for Youth and Families

We are proud to announce the recipients of our inaugural Building Capacity Together grant. Through this grant, we distributed $450,000 to support capacity building projects to 28 Greensboro-based organizations that are working in our priority social drivers of health.

Intended for small-to-mid sized organizations which have operating budgets of $500,000 or less, this capacity building funding supports and strengthens the internal operations and infrastructure of organizations already doing impactful work in our community, increasing scale, impact, and sustainability.

Grant recipients are leveraging this funding for a variety of capacity building efforts, including:

  • Staff training
  • Developing websites and messaging materials
  • Improving internal operations, including financial and legal tools
  • Investments in hardware and software
  • Strategic planning processes
  • And more!

Capacity building is not just about the operations of an organization today—it’s an investment in the growth and effectiveness of the organization into the future, ultimately allowing these organizations to scale their engagement with the communities they serve.

Why we launched this initiative

Cone Health Foundation developed this capacity building grant in response to community feedback. At our Partnering for Health equity convening in January 2024, many organizations shared that building internal capacity was a top priority for organizational focus. Doing so ultimately strengthens their programmatic offerings, allowing them to more effectively carry out their missions, catalyze growth and collaboration opportunities, and elevate work to the systems level.

For example, we know that having stronger internal processes allows for organizations to begin thinking beyond the day-to-day and turn their attention towards more high-level systems change work and explore opportunities for collaboration and coalition-building. As one attendee from the Partnering for Health Equity convening noted:

“It’s good to bring different people together…but there are barriers around coordination and [community] integration. We need more community capacity building to be able to do collaboration well.”
