We are excited to announce $500,000 in grant funding to 54 Greensboro-based nonprofits through the newly created Nurturing Equity grant opportunity. Nurturing Equity funding primarily addresses health outcomes that are influenced by factors such as access to healthy food, affordable healthy housing, economic stability, education, environment and safety, family and social support, and reliable transportation.
Our original intent was to distribute $250,000 in grants; however, due to the unprecedented response and needs described in the proposals, our Board of Directors approved an increase in the amount available for distribution to $500,000. “With the health care inequities experienced by many in our community and exacerbated by the pandemic, our Board’s move to double the Foundation’s investment to advance health equity is right where we need to be,” said Susan Shumaker, President of Cone Health Foundation.
These grants align strongly with our new mission, vision, and values aimed at creating a Greensboro community where historically marginalized communities are flourishing. This means moving beyond addressing access to health care, a place we have traditionally invested heavily, to influencing the social drivers of health.
To that end, we were pleased to learn that 40 of the 73 organizations responding to the Nurturing Equity request for proposals are founded, led, or governed by people who reflect the communities they serve. “Our community partners are instrumental in helping CHF identify ways to support under-resourced groups,” said Jamilla Pinder, Cone Health Foundation’s Director of Equity and Community Engagement. “Improving health is about more than providing access to health care, and we are proud to offer these grants to strong organizations who provide the resources our neighbors need to thrive.”
